Keyboard gone nuts

I

Iain

For sundry reasons, my Windows system has been overrun by viruses and
the likes. Windows explorer doesn't get a chance to start at all,
because the viruses seem to fail to load -- something about a lack of
virtual memory -- error messages galore.

Anyway, this normally would not be a problem. I try to reformat, but
the keyboard ceases to work at the relevant moments. IOW, it often
doesn't work when I need to press delete to enter the bios, and it
_never_ works when I need to "press a key to boot from CD" (the Windows
CD). Sometimes the keyboard doesn't even work in Windows.

So, I cannot boot from a CD in order to reformat and reinstall an OS,
because the keyboard fails when I need it most.

It may be worth noting that the keyboard failures only started at the
same time as the ill-meaning software, overran the system. Has anyone
any ideas what might be happening here?

Hi Iain,
Well you should jet rid off the virus first it may be the one in the Boot
sector which blocking you from doing a clean install.
But First try another Keyboard, your old one may have it all packed up!.
If no joy try to boot with the old Operating system in Safe Mode to access
the safe Mode Sart your Computer and Press F8 on your Keyboard many times
untill you represented with Boot Options to chose from select Safe Mode.
When there Try to establish a connection to the Internet and do a scan
online from here:
http://www.panadasecurity.com
http://www.avast.com
http://www.trendmicro.com
For Malware try this:
http://www.safer-networking.org download for Spybot S&D.
If you can't do the Above try to Slave your HDD to another Machine have the
same Operating System and with Up2date Anti-virus then do a scan for the
Troublesome HDD.
If still no joy and there is no shame of admiting that this is n't your Job,
take your PC to a local Tech to repair it for you.
HTH.
Please let us know.
Regards,
nass

If the keyboard * mouse are USB you may have to enable legacy USB support in
the BIOS to get it to work.

My hands are tied in many of those regards.

I cannot :
1) Access the bios often, because I need the keyboard for that.
Sometimes, if I'm lucky, I can access it (the keyboard spontaneously
works).
2) Use Windows (explorer doesn't start and I am quickly plagued by
error messages)
3) Boot from the windows CD (I cannot use the keyboard at the relevant
moment)
4) Access Safe Mode, etc, because although pressing F8 _does_ work, the
keyboard stops working before I can press up and down in the little
menu.

IOW, the keyboard does work in Windows, works for pressing F8(but not
in the menu), and sometimes works for getting into the bios and using
it, but that is all. I have tried other keyboards. One pin in the
keyboard slot looks a bit bent, but I can't understand how that could
make the keyboard work on and off

That might have been the problem. I solved it by switching to a USB
keyboard. All is right with the world ; Thanks all for giving the
problem your attentions.
