keep paragraph text aligned with heading

In the case where I want have a document in outline form, how can I have
the paragraph following a heading always align with the heading?

ie.

A. akfjdafalkjd
dalfkjadffkldafflkjdf
1. adlkafflkjafsd
dflkjdaakldfslkdja
2. dlafjkdflj
dafkldafl
B. dalkfjdasflkjdf
daflkjadfkljadsf

ps...the first line of the paragraphs in the example above should be
shifted one space to the right :}

If you're using Word's built-in outline numbering (see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html), this is
usually taken care of automatically. If you're numbering your paragraph
manually, you need to use a hanging indent aligned to the tab stop following
the number (Word usually inserts an explicit or implied tab stop where you
set the hanging indent). If you are using auto numbering, be aware that the
indent setting in the Numbering dialog will override any setting in the
Paragraph dialog. For multi-level (outline) numbering, set the indent
("Number position") of each level the same as the hanging indent ("Indent
at") of the the next higher level.

Don't both options mentioned assume that I have not used a return on a
heading? I am using a return, but wanting my first paragraph aligned with
the text.

Two possibilities:

1. If you just need a new line, use a line break (Shift+Enter), which will
return you to the hanging indent.

2. If you need a new paragraph, use the appropriate List Continue style.
