Keep getting prompted to install updates

The last update I received 1.13.1276.6 (KB82519) has been installed but as
soon as it is installed it shows up again saying it needs to be installed. I
have checked and it shows installed on Windows Defender Beta 2. Anyway to
get it to stop showing up again? Thanks!

Check "About Windows Defender" and if think you will find that it did not
really update to 1.13.1276.16. If it didn't update, run the Windows
Installer Cleanup Utility and remove the Windows Defender Definitions only
(not the Windows Defender program). Then run WD update - either Help,
About, Check for Updates or use Microsoft Update to download and install the
new definitions.

If you don't have the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, you can download it
from:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

I don't know what causes the failure to update, this method seems to fix the
problem.

I am havinag the same problem and in the Windows Update it shows it has been
successfuly insgtalled about 12 times! But according to Window Defender it
doesn't show the 1.13.127.16..I downlloaded the Windows Installer clean up,
but it only does Office items. I still have the little yellow security
Windows icon on my systray. Any other ideas? Or did I do something wrong when
I tried to clean it up? Also, should I go to Windows updatae and delete some
of this specific update that says they were successfull?

When you run the cleanup utility, you should find entries for:
(All Users) Windows Defender [1.1.1051.1]
(All Users) Windows Defender Signatures [1.13.1276.3]

You need to remove the signatures only, then try to update.

Other people have found that the method listed below also works (I think it
does the same thing as the cleanup utility):

Thank you Rusty; althought Defender did sow 1.13.1276.3 as my last update &
Windows Update showed it had installed 7 times it did not show in the Windows
Uninstaller. I deleted the 1 updated shown as suggested and tried "update"
in the Defender and the Icon still didn't go away. I then followed your
second suggestions and it disappeared. I have a scheduled update & scan at
4:00 a.m. tomorrow so hopefully the problem is not resolved. Again, thank
you for your time and effort; it is so much appreciated. Kay.

I followed the procedure but Defender comes back saying it doesn't see any
updates available.......help still shows 1.1.1051.0

1.1.1051.0 - defender version
1.1.1185.0 - engine version
1.0 - signature version

I thought something was supposed update to 1.13.1276.6

Yup--those are bad--engine should be 1.1.1186.0, and defs/sigs at:

1.14.1315.1

What you have is an install that has never updated.

Can you go to Windows Update and click Custom--I believe express should
work, but try custom, and see if Windows Defender definition updates are
offered?

Today is first Tuesday, and, depending on your Windows Version--there is at
least one critical security patch on offer--perhaps just the Malicious
Software Removal Tool--but that one alone is well worth running
monthly--quick, easy, and no UI or overhead.

It worked! I had to reboot several times afterwards to get my system to come
back up, but it worked! Thanks Bill, it's interesting I didn't have this
problem on my other machine oh well.

Thanks again.

Terrific--I've seen some oddities on machines where updates are doing the
"install on shutdown" thing--otherwise, all the last set of updates have
gone very smoothly.
