Hi,

I've been advised to download the KB824146 hotfix from
microsoft, in order to sort this SVCHOST.EXE problem
(computer displays shut down prompt when I close one of
these processes - SVCHOST.EXE).

Where can I download this file from, plus how will it
help me?

Thanks

You can get all updates and patches for your Windows version at Windows
Update (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com). Please disable your
anti-virus application and close all other running processes before going to
Windows Update and when downloading/installing from any MS page.

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

It will patch a Remote Procedure Call vulnerability that is exploited by
both blaster worm and welchia worm (and God knows what else). Installing
it will end your system's vulnerability to blaster and welchia worm
attacks, but it will not remove either them if they are present (niether
will most a/v software - they will delete the cuprit file(s), but not
correct the registry changes the worms make). Get these two removal
tools and scan the system AFTER you install the KB824146 hotfix.

I also strongly reccommend getting one of many freeware firewalls, such
as ZoneAlarm or Kerio PF.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Steve
