High CPU usage

hi!

I'm having problem with svchost.exe that take up more than 80% of my CPU
Usage. From the Process Explorer, i noticed that this svchost.exe is actually
use by Automatic Update Services. It will drop to below 10% when i cancel
this service. When svchost.exe is running at abouve 80%, my pc becomes
extremely slow. I've tried the hotfixes from Microsoft KB_916089 & KB_927891,
but it didn't help. I'm getting the windows Update from our WSUS server.

Here's the spec of the PC.
P3 500, 384MB, 8GB HD. Installed with WinXP SP2, Office2003 SP2, Visio &
Project 2003 SP2, Media Player 11.

Any idea what can i do from here? Pls advise. Thanks.

I'm not sure svhost is the entire problem.....seeing what you listed as your
pc specs, I note they are on the borderline of the "minimum requirements"
for XP.....

*** 8 Gb hard drive? Is that right? (or is it a typo, and you really mean
80Gb?)

If you really did mean 8gigabytes hard drive, you should get a new HDD with
at minimum, 40 Gb (if something that small still exists, these days the
minumum drive size available is more like 80Gb), and also adding more RAM
would be beneficial - at least 512Mb for decent performance.

yup, it has only 8GB HD. I know that it's a slow machine, but it was running
ok once i've cancel the automatic update.

I got this from another newsgroup but it worked for me:

I've been stuggling with this problem myself. After days of looking
online, installing patches, and people telling me I had a
virus.....sort of hard to do since it was a FRESH install.
None-the-less, I'm glad someone has a solution that works.

Problem: SVCHOST.EXE uses 60-100% cpu at bootup or when Microsoft
Update is running.

CAUSE: Bug in Microsoft Update (Microsoft Update scans all
Microsoft
software including office/
Windows update only scans Windows for updates)

FIX:
go to windows update and check if the "get microsoft update today"
banner is there, if it is then this is not your problem, if it's not,
click on 'change settings' on the left, in the next window scroll down
and un-tick microsoft update and click on 'apply changes now' , you'll
now be back to windows update only.
