Kaspersky - BAD!!

Hi all,

Ok, today I paid for and installed Kaspersky v5.0. PC immediately crashed
with BSOD after windows started. Ha ha, I thought a minor conflict, so I
disabled ALL start up programs in Msconfig and still it BSOD'd. Uninstalled
KAV and rebooted just fine. Hmmm. Reinstalled (without rebooting) and
updated to the latest version. Now it wouldn't receive email with OE6 until
I disabled it. Crap. Now removed and reverted to the free AVG and
demanding a refund from Kapersky.

Now I know there will be replies saying, "well it works ok here", or "do
this do that", but bear in mind that I've never had a BSOD on my PC (WinXP
Pro SP1), EVER.

Any software that does this to my 'puter and causes me this much angst just
ain't worth messing around with. I have so much 'stuff' installed, a lot of
it crappy shareware that has never caused my PC to crash like this - and
don't say this could be a conflict either, I disabled everything.

I've heard good reviews about KAV and know it works OK for most, yet fails
miserably in the basics. It may be a good AV program, but they need to sort
out this crap soon.

Be warned - avoid BIG TIME.

For what it's worth, just because you disable applications running
resident, doesn't preclude there being .dll conflicts. Also, did you try
to boot to safe mode? You might have been able to disable some of the
default configuration settings, which might have made the product useful.

Would you LET someone install soaftware on your PC if they said it was
crappy?

Me thinks not!

Yes worked in Safe Mode, and I tried to disable as much as I could. But KAV
crashes my PC on startup even when it is not starting up itself, just being
installed is enough.

Now waiting for Kapersky to sort this out.

I noticed you have a AVG signature at the bottom of your posts. If it's the
same machine as you are trying KAV on, you should remove AVG first.

I'm using the free version of AVG for now, it wasn't installed (or any other
AV program) when Kaspersky was in use. Thanks though.

Why, works perfectly well, except for KAV!! In fact last month was the first
reboot after 51 days straight - after playing loads of games, video editing
and whatever else - after 51 DAYS. No the PC is fine, KAV is the problem.

I tend to agree with Dixon. From experience I know that when you install as
many programs as you say you have, it's just a matter of time to run into
problems. I have done the same thing in the past and eventually you will
have some type of conflict. For you it was Kaspersky this time. It could had
been something else. Just have to remember that the more programs you
install the higher chance of conflicts between softwares.

If this is the IRP error than you can easy be solved. There is a registry
entry that controls the load order of the KAV driver:

The key is located at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Klif

Inside is "Start" entry with the default value 1.

You can change the "Start" entry with 1, 2 or 3:

1) Boot
2) Automatic
3) On-Demand

Boot into safe mode and change the value into 2.

I wonder if "5" is developing into an unlucky number? Zone Alarm 5
has not had a happy launch and personally, as a long established
user of Kaspersky on Win98-SE and XP Pro, I am not at all
comfortable with V5. I use V3.5.133.0. Luckily the updates
(C:\Program Files\Common Files\AVP Shared) work OK for both the old
and new versions. Keep on with kaspersky, it is a good program
which is easy to drive in the earlier versions!

Download dashchund software's anticrash and let it do a crash analysis
on your system and test your applications. See if that works. I used
to get BSOD when I used my floppy drive that anticrash detected and
fixed. (no, it wasn't a hardware problem). It's not free but see if
you can use the trial to successfully resolve the problem with your
system.

I built this computer I'm using now, and the motherboard came with a
CD that included PC-cillin 2002, which I installed. For just under a
month I kept getting regular, like more than daily, BSOD, which caused
me immense inconvenience and frustration, and caused me to mess up
with hardware time and again, like i said, because i built it myself
and thought i might've done something wrong or some items didn't fit
together as they should.

I don't know what it is or how I managed to guess it was the
antivirus, but it was after a considerable bother, and amazingly many
people on the motherboard forums reported having similar problems, but
none mentioned the antivirus, which now makes me wonder how much
hassle those motherboard manufacturer, MSI and ASUS, must've had from
PC-Cillin 2002.

After I uninstalled it, back then, the BSODs disappeared.
