K-Meleon

I've been using the standard release for a while now and am really
impressed with it

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/

and have just stumbled upon the unofficial K-M 0.8.2+ release

http://hch.uwnet.nl/k-meleon/

which feels faster to me and has the extra toolbar buttons that I want
as standard: java toggle, image toggle, javascript toggle. And the
privacy plug in is nice, enabling instant clearing of cache, history
etc. And the tabbing feels much more efficient.

Any comments from users here as to the merits or otherwise of this
'unofficial' build over the standard build? And any commments on the
upcoming 0.9?

I've been using 0.82 for a while as my default browser. Works really
well and it loads a little faster than Firefox. Seems to browse quite
a bit faster. Only thing I've found a minor niggle is organising
favourites.

Have you tried the 'unofficial' release?

I started out with 0.82, switched to 0.8.2+, tried a few other builds, and
am delighted by the latest testbuild, 0.9 beta4, available here:

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/forum/read.php?f=1&i=20260&t=20260

The 0.82+ was a much improved version of 0.82 , but slower in browsing than
the official 0.82 on my machine. Though that seemed to depend on the age of
my system, other users reported an improvement in speed.
The new 0.9beta versions based on the Mozilla 1.74 engine are far superior
in my opinion.
Fast, nice set of standard plugins, nice standard toolbars, it's absolutely
great.
Make sure to check the K-Meleon wiki:

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?id=Welcome

Very good source for all kinds of configuring information, as is the forum:

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/forum/

It's very easy to configure via the configs under preferences.
There's a great ad-block script here:

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?id=ControllingDisplay

Just one example of many to making it the browser you want it to be.
Far less resource-hungry than Mozilla and Firefox.
Love it.

it's fast, and has promise...but...it keeps crashing on silly things
like clicking on a link, or changing a setting.

It re-opens real fast....*wry grin*...but that is small consolation. I
may use it occasionally to access pages where I don't want an already
set cookie, but it obviously needs a bit more tinkering....beta is as
beta does.

Which beta crashes? I used 3 for 2 weeks and never had a crash. I've
installed 4 just today but no crashes through a heavy workout.

Yep; I think it is miles better. I've never got on with Firefox. It
has always felt resource hungry to me and I never liked it enough to
find out why.

Thx for this, and the rest of the post. I can see K-Meleon
tweaking/testing being a hobby to come :)

It's alomost an obsession for me ;)
But serious, it gets better and better. Everytime I want to tweak it some
more to my needs I find there's an easy way to do it, it's absolutely
fantastic.
I love the adblocker I mentioned in my previous post. I don't run any
third-party programs to block ads.
Check out this page (which I visit daily) with and without the adblock
applied and you see what I mean.

Yes this looks good. Starts up faster than firefox, seems to be a bit
faster in rendering webpages. I wonder if the plugins will be standard
issue with 1.0 k-melon. Seems to hit the sweet spot in terms of providing
just enough features.

Their tabs (actually layers) control is pretty impressive, undoclose
tabs, positioning of new tabs opened , control over which tab to focus
too when closing a existing tab (including the last selected tab), tab
groups (options to open tab groups only, or to append) etc.

I like the privacy options too, including the ability to clear cache,
cookies etc on startup or on closing. Basic mouse gesture etc.

Also exposes many of the hidden options in firefox in the menus..

Certainly one to watch

How is K-Meleon at downloads these days? The last time I tried it, a
year ago, it was just terrible - every download was corrupted.

the 'unofficial' 8.2+ that jo mentioned in the first post....sorry if
that wasn't clear...

Interesting. I've had it fall over a couple of times in the last few
days but assumed that was down to me abusing the machine horribly.
The 'official' build never fell over.
If it crashes on me I will move on.

No problem with downloads at all, using either the internal downloader
or LeechGet, which integrates well.
