K-Meleon 0.8 Build 833 Beta
Beta Version
Program Type: Freeware

File Description:

K-Meleon is the Windows answer to Galeon. Thus, K-Meleon is a lite Web
browser based on Gecko (the Mozilla rendering engine). It's fast, it has a
light interface, and it is fully standards-compliant. To make it simple,
K-Meleon could be considered as the unbloated Mozilla version for Windows.

K-Meleon doesn't require Mozilla to be installed to run. The K-Meleon
interface tries to mimic the IE MFC interface as much as possible. For
convenience, it also uses the IE bookmarking system.

Changes in Current Version:
Built on the Mozilla 1.5 release code with the patch for GDI leaks
included

I used 0.7 for a long time on my former (slower) PC. Just tried 0.8
and it's like an old friend :) Imported my large Moz bookmarks without
a hitch. Has popup blocking just as does Moz. Nice fast little
browser. Super for quick info lookup and research.

Does anyone have a direct download link which I can use for my
download manager. The one on the page above only works with M$'s own
downloader.

Huh? It "only works with M$'s own downloader"?

I'm downloading the zip from that link, right now, with *Mozilla* running
on *Linux*.

In this case, I see a direct URL listed right on the page, no?

While this time I am seeing a direct URL, I am well aware of the problem
with the msie-based browsers. When you have redirects and php and all,
and at last get to a download link -- their download box won't tell you
the actual URL. In contrast to Kmeleon and other browsers, whose download
dialog boxes do provide an URL for copying out, to your download manager.

Quick mention: I noticed Win32Get, it can often sort of follow things
around, and eventually give me a direct URL. Possible there are some
other clever single-file-getters like this one.

One day I plan to look into setting up a context menu option on my sytem for
my msie-based browsers, which will send those difficult redirect links out
to a different program, to Kmeleon for instance, to be able to end with the
copy-able download URLs.

Any comments about the new K-Meleon vs. the new Firebird?

On my P166, Firebird loads pretty fast and runs fine. The old 0.7
K-Meleon loaded very slow.

I haven't made any detailed comparisons.

Hmm. My former PC had a AMD K6-2 400 mhz with 92 meg RAM. K-M was
without a doubt the fastest kid on the block with that PC. It loaded
quickly compared to any of the Moz based browsers. On my PIII 900 mhz
PC with 128 RAM K-M loads "instantly". Comparisons to other older Moz
versions available back when when I was using K-M 0.7 are like
comparing appples to oranges since they've all been speeded up I
believe.

And v. 0.8b is very good, my no. 1 browser! Definitely Pricelessware.

I can't get a menu bar with this build. Is it me or is it a bug?

Indeed. I would consider it the IE version of Mozilla if that makes any
sense. :)
