I'm just curious why so many people go to all the trouble of registering,
then signing in then waiting for the screen to come up so they can enter
stuff like:

Well, these groups are actually newsgroups, and there's lots of ways to
access them. The simplest is using a newsreader (I use Outlook Express).
There is also a web interface on the Microsoft site that does not require
any registration. And there are several other web interfaces that do
require registration (eg. Google Groups, and (IIRC) Access Monster).

And, some of them are people with little intellectual stimulation but lots
of time on their hands, some are people who don't know the difference
between posting to a newsgroup and sending an e-mail (I bet they are just a
little torqued out of shape when the person they thought they were sending
it to doesn't reply), and some may be secret agents communicating in code.
Be careful what you respond to any whose signature is double-ought anything.
