I know all there is to know about computers .... erm - that should read - all there is to know about getting them to blue screen, blow up or otherwise get them to stop working as they should!
If there's a level below novice then that's me so I think I'm going to need all the help I can get from you good people.

I am still at it, tried cd rw on pc and was detected straight away, laptop keeps crashing now, although can connect using ethernet, seems more likely usb problem, if i wiggle it it goes to blue screen, not that i can see what it says as reboots lol
but i only have to move laptop and it happens.

AK, the laptop doesn't sound too healthy. I don't know if it would be worthwhile investing in a pcmcia 4 port usb hub for about £15. That way you are bypassing the laptop ports altogether.
