Just downloaded latest updates from microsoft-now cannot use pc :-(

Hi,
can anyone help.I have Windows XP pro, setup to download
the latest updates automatically. This has been working
well for over 4 months. Today. Swich on PC, gets to logon
screen ok, enter password, then it frezes. Tried safe
mode, can login , works for a about 30 secs., have tried
to get into system restore, run it, and get the part where
it informed me of the update from the 17th oct where the
pc was downloading the latest updates, then, the machine
freezes. Is there anyway to stop all the drivers etc from
running by holding a button down ? or somthing. at
present, I have tried all including the last known, and no
luck.

I had a similar type of experience. Mircosoft tech support told me that my user profile had been corrupted. They had me try logging on as the Guest User and then everything was okay. I had to set up a NEW USER and then go through the pain of entering all new settings for the new user. I later found out that the real problem was that the download patch had a conflict with my usage of a ramdrive and having my folders of Cookies, History and Temporarty Internet Files going to the ramdrive.
