joining a domain

here is my problem: i have 2 servers, one is on a domain, the other on a
workgroup. server1 is my dc and is on the domain running 2000 server.
server2 should be a member server on the domain but is currently on a
workgroup, and is running 2000 server. both servers recieve ip addresses
from the same router, they can now
both see each other(each server can see both the domain and the workgroup, as
well as each server in each domain and workgroup) in entire network and ping
each other by name and by ip address. however, when i try and add server2 to
the domain, i recieve an error that says:

"The following error occured while trying to join the domain "domainname":
The network path could not be found. "

any suggestions?

Usually this means the affected computer is pointing to a DNS server that
does not have the SRV records for the domain.

Point the server to the DNSserver you set up for the domain.

i have no clue what any of the stuff you just put in here means...is there
any way that you can break it down a little bit for me?

The DC (server1) for the domain will have had DNS installed/setup. Have the
workgroup machine (server2) use it for it's DNS.
Network properties/tcp properties and enter IP of the DC.

AD must have a DNS server set up for the AD domain. I would suggest using
your existing DC and installing and setting up DNS.
See:

Once this is done, point the new server to your existing (now DNS) server by
opening control panel - network connections and right clicking on the local
area connection that represents the network card you are connecting to the
network and select properties. In the section that states "this connection
uses the following items" highlight Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click on
the properties button. On the resulting page click to enable "Use the
following DNS server address". Input the IP address of your server you
installed DNS on.
