Java Virtual Machine

Chris

I just purchased the Windows XP and I am trying to get
onto the yahoo games. All I get is a box with an X at
the top right hand corner

I can not seem to properly install the down load for the
Java VM.

Yahoo had warned me that Windows XP does not support the
Java VM. If that is so how am I able to view anything
that requires Java VM.

Thanks.

Windows does support the java virtual machine. Jave was created by Sun
Microsystems and then MS stole it and made it better. Then sun didn't like
that ms made it better and they cried and sued ms. Now ms cannot distrubute
their virtual java machine, cause sun won the lawsuit, but windows fully
supports it and you can download it from other places. I have tried the ms
version and the sun version and time after time, the ms one worksd better
for me. Try here:

It seems Yahoo! is not moving their games away from Java based. Zone.com is
converting some to flash. Yahoo! should do that soon, if everyone would send
feedbackj abut this

Greetings --

As the result of a lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and the ensuing
settlement, Microsoft is no longer allowed to provide its own Java
Virtual Machine to Windows users. You can get almost the same
functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the broader
capabilities of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still
available from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, some of which are listed
here: http://www.java-virtual-machine.net/download.html.

Java VM.

MS produced a Java that extends the language as defined by Sun, so that
it would 'work better' with Windows. This was not included in windows
XP, but was available as a separate download, and included in XP SP1

(There appear to be sites that have taken advantage of this, and will
not work with the Sun one).

Sun sued MSoft, and the ruling in the case prohibits MS from making
'their' engine available as a download - so it is left out of the
revised SP1a

You can still get a 3805 or 3809 build from some sites that are *not*
MSoft sites - and MSoft is not going to object.
eg 3805 from Http://www.bigblackglasses.com/staff/downloads/msjavx86.exe

Once you have such an older version you can get the 816093 'critical
security update' which is effectively a complete build, 3810

Alex,
What with this java problem, I got to looking in my Downloaded
Programs Folder and have one called UPDATE CLASS and it says
it is an Active X type file.. It appears it was updated on 8-23-03.
I am not sure if this is pertaining to java vm or not... What do you
think? Also, I have a file stored in one of my self created storage
folder called "msjavx86.exe" and am not sure if I ever installed it
and if not, SHOULD I ??? Or maybe I should say, how can I figure
out if I did install it?
Also, do you have a tech web site? If so, send me the URL and I
will add it to the tech page URL's on my tech page. I get a lot
of hits on that page and would like you included.
Thanks,

no - that is to do with Microsoft's 'ActiveX' controls: similar to Java
in action, but definitely windows specific, whereas Java is supposed to
be machine independent.

That would be a MS java installation program which can just be run to
install the engine: provided it is old enough. About a year ago, they
modified the versions so that they would only run if an earlier version
was already installed.

You can check status by Start - Run - WJView which if present indicates
the current version - you can then check, and if needed get that upgrade
to 3810. If it does not run, try your msjava86 and recheck - if that
does not run, get one from a third party site

I have pages on Jim Eshelman's WinSupportCenter - home URL of that is
http://aumha,org, or for pages on Win 2000/XP specifically (including
mine) , a secondary level http://aumha.org/win5/articles.htm would be
appropriate.
