Java problem

I have a problem where most java based websites wont load
properly, or sites with java scripted links wont work.
i am running Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 1. I
have uninstalled MS Java Virtual Machine and am running
the latest version of Sun Java 1.42_04. The SUn Java box
is checked in advanced options. this problem is
particular when using sites with "sign-in" buttons in
java and www.fhm.com. I tried putting the VM back on but
still had the same problems. I want to keep the sun java
since MS dont support VM any more. Im just lost as to
what to do now.any help appreciated.

You don't explain what your problem is but if it is the same as mine, when
you try to access a site that requires Java to be enabled I get a message to
say VM Java requires to be installed and an offer to install it. If I click
install a 17kb file loads and all is well. This has happened since I
removed MS Java VM and loaded Sun Java. I have seen others posting with
this problem but no solution yet.

You are wrong. Microsoft and Sun have worked out an agreement in which Microsoft Java Virtual Machine will be good until 31 December 2007 instead of ending in September of 2004. See web-link for details:

I've just recently seen this exact problem. A fresh install of Sp1a,
Ran the MS Java uninstaller. Then installed Sun Java 1.4.2_04.
Went to Sun's Java Test site - Reports everything O.K. Yet, on
some websites get the "Download Java" box.
I uninstalled Sun Java, then went to
C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files and removed the two
instances of Java. Also cleaned the "Use Sun Java" toolbar from
IE.
Rebooted and re-installed the Sun Java. Afterwards, everything
works fine. I can't say if this process will work exactly as stated,
but it was the 1st time I've experienced problems using the Sun
Java.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I've already run the MS Java Uninstaller but
by itself it didn't solve the problem.

As a follow-up I uninstalled Sun Java, ran the MS Java removal program again
and reinstalled Sun Java. All is now working OK. Thanks again for your
advice.
