Java applets problem with XP

First, let me say, I know little about computers even
though I've worked on them for 15 years.

Ok, I'm trying to access a website that utilizes java
applets (a mapping tool website.) The page says that my
browser does not support java applets. I checked under
Internet Options, Advanced Tab and found nothing to check
for enabling java. I've asked my local computer store,
and they have no idea since they said XP is suppose to
enable them automatically.

Any ideas? :)

Go here:
http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp

Then look at the top right, in the bright green box where it says "free
download".

If you'd rather have the MS version that was removed from their dowmlaod
site over a lawsuit, i can give you that from my site if you need it. let me
know.

Internet Options > Security > (single click on the "Internet" globe) >
Custom Level > (Look under Microsoft VM > Java Permissions ) > Set "Java
Permissions" to "medium safety"

They are wrong: you have to take action. MS produced a Java that
extends the language as defined by Sun, so that it would 'work better'
with Windows. This was not included in windows XP, but was available as
a separate download, and included in XP SP1

Sun sued MSoft, and the ruling in the case prohibits MS from making
'their' engine available as a download - so it is left out of the
revised SP1a

So either get the Sun Java engine from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

Or you can still get a 3805 or 3809 build from some sites that are *not*
MSoft sites - and MSoft is not going to object.
eg 3805 from Http://www.bigblackglasses.com/staff/downloads/msjavx86.exe

Once you have such an older version you can get the 816093 'critical
security update' which is effectively a complete build, 3810
