Japanese Text Support

Whenever I open a page with Japanese text, whether with
Shift-JIS, Auto-Select, or EUC, it comes out as a strange
bold typeface with irregular punctuation (i.e., periods
are replaced by "MI" and commas by "MA"), although I used
to be able to load these pages correctly. Moreover, the
Japanese doesn't load. I tried deleting the text support
and reinstalling it, but to no avail. Suggestions, anyone?
