I've picked up hunt bar (spyward)

I have obviously picked up hunt bar. Spybot detects it, it says I have
hkey_local_machine\software\btien. It cannot get rid of it. I ask it to
run upon reboot and still it cannot get rid of this. I also tried in safe
mode but no luck. Adaware doesn't detect it. Any ideas would be
appreciated. I hate these spyware programs.

I'd rather not fool around with the registry as I'm not an advanced user.
I'd rather find something that can remove it automatically. Thanks in
advance.

According to several sites, huntbar changes often enough that the usual
tools can't remove all variations.

Try following the instructions at
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/HuntBar.html It's not as difficult as it
sounds.

Or, alternately, go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ Read the instructions
and download HijackThis. Post a HijackThis log to the "HijackThis Logs"
forum at http://forum.mvps.org/ Someone can take you through the removal
process.

Hope this helps,
Don

Thanks, I'll try this.

I just did a search on my computer and found a folder called hunt bar in
documents and settings\owner\favorites. I suppose I could delete this
folder - but I just want to get rid of things in the best way.

Know you dont want to but......run,,,regedit,,,edit
tab,,,find,,,type in hkey_local_machine\software\btien
click find,,,it will take you to the folder,,,the folder
will appear open,,, right click on it and click
remove....I always create a restore point right before I
do this, that way I can always restore it if I FUP IT UP!
It's not that hard, got to learn sometime!

I hear Pestpatrol will get rid of this. I can download trial version and
see if it helps me. Do you think this is wise?

Alternatively do you thing deleting the file hunt bar in documents and
stetting\owner\favorites is a good way to go?

I greatly appreciate any advice. I'm still nervous that I don't know enough
about registry to play around there

Is Spybot running with the 04 Mar-04 update? Spybot should be able to
remove it.

Checking your system for "hijackware":

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.mvps.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

Spybot couldn't remove it. I've read on the internet that some variations
of hunt bar are very difficult to remove. I did check for recent updates
of spybot.

Thanks, will try HijackThis. I'm always a little nervous, because in the
past I've downloaded programs that caused problems and then couldn't be
fully removed. The "one problem leads to another problem" phenomenon.

Will read. It's a shame surfing the internet can bring on such problems and
there's such a need for safe surfing. It's like a neighborhood that you
can't go for a walk in. They should try to clean up the neighborhood. I
know you know this, and I'm just stating the obvious - but it really makes
me mad.

Make sure you read it all: HijackThis is /not/ a plug 'n play tool like
Ad-Aware and Spybot. Post your logs to an appropriate forum for expert
assistance.

Guess what, I cant delete the involved key from registry. It may
have something to do with permissions, but can't change permissions and get
it deleted.

Maybe if I go into my daughter' profile I can do it (but will need to get
her password first)

Also tried the mvp exe file to kill it, but it's still there (the registry
key btiein is there and spybot and adaware still detect it but can't delete
it) Any ideas now?

I'm bringing in the Special Forces Unit here, LL, so hold you horses for a
bit.

Meanwhile, if you used HijackThis you'd be able to delete the keys in
question.
