Spyware or trojan infection

In the notifications taskbar (bottom right), I keep getting a popup headed
"System Alert!" with the yellow triangle. The message says:

"System has detected a number of active spyware applications that may impact
the performance of your computer. Click the icon to get rid of unwanted
spyware by downloading an up-to-date antispyware solution."

If I click, I get taken to a website offering "AntiVirGear" for download and
purchase.

I suspect this alert is itself part of a trojan or spyware infection, trying
to pester me into buying the software (I already have spyward protection but
it does not detect this problem).

Any ideas on how to get rid of this problem?
