I've been having many problems with 1600x1200 on my new computer.

I have had little flashing dots on my screen. Here are the fcats:

1. It only happens on 1600x1200.

2. I have an LCD: A Dell2001FP. I'm positive I have no dead pixels. It's on
DVI.

3. This didn't happen on my old computer. I just got a new new custom-made
computer.

4. The dots don't appear in the BIOS, screensaver, or start-up.

5. The dots tend to line up with the top of a window. There are dots that
are ALWAYS in one small area at the way top of my desktop. In FireFix, they
eventually appear on the left and right side. They kind of blur anything they
touch (not permanently).

6. When there are no windows, the dots are in certain areas. When a window
comes up, they follow the top of it as it moves. When I get rid of the
window, they go back to their normal location.

7. When I take a screenshot of the dots next to the top of a window, the
dots are still flashing in the screenshot. They are not part of the
screenshot, but they follow the window in the screen when I select the window
are the dots.

8. I am not overclocking at all. I turned of auto-overclocking in the BIOS.

9. I have a 6800 Ultra.

10. In the BIOS, my CPU is 54 degrees celcius and my motherboard is 31..
isn't that pretty high for a Lian-li v1000 with 2 120mm fans and cool+quiet
and thermal grease?

11. On 1024x768 my GPU temp is 53 core on the desktop. On 1600x1200 it can
go as high as 56.

So is this the monitor? Is it because of DVI? I don't want to go to Analog..
or is it the computer? Is it overheating, even on the desktop?

I know this is an XP bug, but sometimes (only on 1600x1200, of course...) my
screen goes blank for a second when switching screens (minimizing, switching
tabs and windows). In games (1600x1200 only, of course...), I sometimes get
the dots in the same areas. I don't remember, but I think they were following
the outside of certain textures. I also get lock-ups, some where I have to
force-shutdown in games.

I really want to get this fixed because it's a new gaming computer. I'm
using 1600x1200 on the desktop right now. I didn't get the dots in FireFox so
far.. just on the top on my desktop. Strangely, my screen didn't go black yet.

Any help would be appreciated.

What frequency setting are you using? Have you tried new drivers for the
monitor and video card?

Well I am at 60Hz because that's all LCDs can do at 1600x1200. I'm using the
newest official video card driver. I want to know what piece of hardware is
causing this problem so I can go from there.

What about the monitor driver from Dell?

There is a newer driver, but I doubt it fixes what I have, and it says it's
only for Dell systems in the readme thing online. Should I try it anyway?

BTW, I think something is wrong with my graphics card. Between this and
getting a low 3Dmark03 score, I think it may be defective.

This may not help much, but the ATI
driver has a "Reduce DVI frequency on high-resolution
displays" and an "alternate DVI operational mode" option
that was introduced to help with problems such as this.

If the nVidia driver has a similar option try it.

I found an NVIdia tweak utility (first thing that pops up with Google when
you search "nvidia tweak"), but it wasn't tested for the 6800 series and the
61.77 drivers.

Try it anyway.

Make a restore point first.
