It takes many minutes to open documents listed in WINDOWS EXPLORER

I have a new XP installation. When I want to open files(.doc, .xls,.txt, etc)
using the left click, Explorer waits 2-5 minutes before it activates the
program. The same with the right click, then the OPEN WITH takes 2-5 minutes.
If on the other hand I open WORD and access the file using the WORD menu,
access is immediate. The same with EXCEL, MATHEMATICA, NOTEPAD. WINDOWS was
reinstalled anew and the problem reappeared as I thought that QUICKTIME was
causing the glitch. Where can I address and (how) the registry to see if the
list of extensions is not corrupt when I open files in EXPLORER? I do not
want to install the system completely as it doesn't solve the problem. Where
is the corruption?

I'm not completely sure of what you mean. My previous computer, that the
present one(the one with the problem) replaced, had access to the older PC
working on Windows 2000 where I kept files and programs that use Wordperfect
and quattro. I don't remember that the link was set properly. Also the older
computer had access to drives on the departmental server who is not in
service anymore. The system administrator used these definitions. However he
left work.
