Documents slow to open in windows XP explorer

I am running XP Home Edition service pack 3 and Microsoft Office 2003

If I open a Word or Excel document in Explorer, it can take up to nearly a
minute to open. However, if I click on the same document within the programs
it opens instantly. If I reboot, things speed up considerably, but then
begin toslow down quite quickly. Other files such as Pdfs and picture files
don't seem to be affected. There is no warning/error log message displayed
in the event viewer when I try to open the document.

I have tried various things - repaired Office 2003, changed the .dot
file,run CCleaner, run the
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/wia.reg. I've done virus checks,
and run adaware. I have at least 31gb space on the 74gb disk. Not sure
where to go from here.

I would be grateful for any suggestions that don't involve a complete
reinstall of the system since my computer acts as a server. The other user
of the server has no problemat all opening his documents.

Many thanks
Alfonso

Going from memory here but try changing the "DDE" setting in Options of
the two applications.
