When the user’s attempt to login to the system they get ‘stuck’ at Loading
Your Personal Settings, I logged into the system in Safe Mode with
Networking. I checked the DNS settings. Then I unplugged the network cable
and restarted the pc. When the login screen came up, I inserted the network
cable and attempted to logon. When I logged onto the pc in Safe Mode, I ran
msconfig and compared the system startup to a pc that was working correctly.
After the restart, the pc would still not load. I deleted all the items for
startup. I am still unable to login to the system.
I Ran various system utilities to determine what the issue is. Concluded
that it was Symantec that was keeping the OS from loading. Removed Symantec
and installed various anti-spyware software. The really weird issue is that
this is the only pc out of the 5 thats experiencing any issues.
I know that there were issues with doscan.exe and Symantec version 10.0.x,
so I ran the registry updates without any success. The pc is running Windows
XP with SP2.
I installed Symantec Corportate version 9 and I am not having any
issues....any help is greatly appreciated. I know this is not a Microsoft
issue, necessarily, but I thought, it can't hurt to try.

I have "fixed" a miilion and one pooters in my time and it seems to me
a million of them had Symantec security installed, I have long since
given up chasing Symantec faults, they happen for no apparant reason
and leave identical machines untouched as you noticed. I know of only
3 ways to fix a Symantec issue.

1. Uninstall / Re-install the software but do not rely on the
uninstaller to do it get the tool from Symantecs' site and search the
registry for left overs, this fixes the problem 50% of the time if you
do it properly. (Symantec Help Pages always tell you to do this after
pointlessly f***ing you about for a while).

2. Bin it and put something less prone to random disaster, 100% fix
rate and my personal favourite.

3. Re-install Windows from scratch - radical but 100% fix rate.

I had heard that Symantec Corporate stuff is a lot better than the
crap they foist on newbie home users - none of my clients use it so I
don't see it very often. Is it any better or is this just "I bought
20,000 copies so I had better big it up" corporate babble?

All of our clients run Symantec Corporate AV software, more than 1500
seats, and we also use Symantec Mail Security on the Exchange servers -
the only problem we've had is with Symantec Corp and SBS2003 + SP1. The
non-SP1 systems run without any issues, as do the Sym Corp 9 systems,
and all of the XP+SP2 and 2000 desktops/laptops work without problem.

I bought a 10 seat license for my home and have not found anything
better on the market.

Well I had heard its a lot better than the normal home user version, I
have seen so many problems with Norton involved on home and small
business PCs I have lost count.

I think the home version is far too bloated and not robust enough for
home users + it is very difficult to fix when a simple re-install is
not that simple and can make things very much worse.

As I said I have never seen the corporate version from an admin POV, I
might try it on a spare machine if as you say its that good.

We had a client want to remote into the office, they only have a Windows
2000 workstation with 64MB (yea, I have not seen anything that low in
years) on a Celeron 400 (Compaq Deskpro).

It had no AV software, running IE 5.0, etc... It was using 65MB ram just
idling.... I installed all service packs, updated it IE6, added JavaVM,
etc.... Then I installed Symantec Corp 10 with Groupware protection
(since it won't install on IE5.0).

The machine runs 69MB now, just a few meg more than before the
updates...

The machine is a tad slower, but not that the user would notice. It also
lets them VPN into the network and I installed Remote Desktop support,
so they can now use the TS box at the office without any problems.

If you disable Network scanning from Symantec, since it's not really
needed, it makes it a lot faster.
