Is There a Way to Number Slides in a Printed Version?

I'm a novice PP user and I'll admit I didn't spend a lot of time
looking through the help for this, but I didn't see a way to number
slides when I print them for a handout. I'm printing 4 slides to a
page and it isn't obvious what order they are on the page. It would
be good if it would number them.

Is there a quick/easy way to do this?

If you are using PowerPoint 2000, 2002, or 2003

Go to the Handout Master
View => Master => Handout Master

Change the Page Numbering setting
View => Header and Footers => (check) Page number

Thanks for your reply.

I get page numbers, but there are 4 slides on a page and the slides
are not numbered.

You can add numbers to the slides themselves using View | Header and Footer.

Then on the slide master, format the number placeholder so it's pretty large
and you'll be able to see it on the thumbnails. Print your handout, then
turn off the slide numbers.

Unfortunately, there's no way to add numbers *next to* the slides thumbnails
in a PPT handout. You could, though, use File | Send to | Word. The option
with lines or notes beside slides gives you a third column with the slide
numbers.
