slide numbers on print out

Using Power Point 2003. When I choose to print handouts with 6 slides per
page, is there a way to also have those slides numbered on the print out?

For example, in the normal view with the slides panel on the left visible,
the slides are displayed in numerical order with the number visible off the
upper left corner of the slide. In the slide sorter view, the slides are
displayed in numerical order with the number visible off the lower right
corner of the slide.

It's that numerical display I would like to have when I print handouts with
6 slides per page. Any ideas???

Handouts are numbered "per-page" ... if you have 18 slides in the presentation
and print 6 per page handouts, you'll get three pages of output numbered 1
through 3. No way to change that.

The numbers on the individual slides WILL apppear in the slide images on your
handouts, though. If you temporarily made them larger (by changing the Slide
Master and Title Master number placeholder formatting to a larger font size)
then they might be visible in your handouts.

They'll be ON the slides rather than next to them; no way to change that.

Another option that may help is Shyam's Handout Wizard. Have a look at

Thanks, Steve. The awkward part of all this is that while the individual
slide numbering you described below is helpful on the print out, I don't
want those numbers on the actual presentation. We may have 20 slides in a
program that I display as the speaker jumps from one to another. I need to
know the number of the slide that displays his topic so that I can jump to
it when he addresses that topic. That's why I need the numbers on my
printed copy.

But I'd hate to have the "audience" see the slides jumping from 1 to 9 to 14
to 3, etc. Maybe I could delete the slide numbers after I print my copy.
That would be a good work around, but it would be so nice to have the slide
numbers visible on the printed handout the way they are visible in the views
I mentioned below.

In a way, that makes it simpler. Format the numbers nice and big. Before
printing handouts, choose View, Header and Footer; put a check next to Slide
Number, click Apply to All and print.

Then go back, remove the check, click Apply to All again and your numbers are
gone.
