Is my USB cable modem slower then a regular cat5 cable?

I just found out that I had a USB cable modem, with no cat5 cable hookup at
all. Is that slower then a cat 5 cable? The reason I found out that I had
this, because I wanted to install a wireless setup, so I can hook up my
laptop in the living room, or any other place in the house. So my USB cable
is still attached, and now I have an additional cat 5 cable from my PC to
the internet plug on my Linksys router. My laptop works, but it seems not
right to me, the hook up I mean. Anyone care to shed some light on my
newfound interest. Wireless communication. Honestly it scares me, but it is
a nice setup. It is a 802.11g type device......Peter

It depends, CAT5 can do 1000mbps, at least that's the spec for CAT5.
While most DSL/Cable modems only do 10mbps or 100mbps on newer units,
the real issue is that USB networking is problematic most of the time,
and it means you can't use standard networking hardware.

Trade in the USB Cable modem for a CAT5 cable modem and then put your
Linksys behind it and your nodes behind the linksys.

Don't forget to secure the Linksys wireless - they default to all
exposed/open.
