Cable Modem

Recently I purchased a second Dell Laptop. I want to put
it on a wireless network in our home. When trying to
initialize the wireless access point I realized that my
Motorola SB4200 cable modem had to be set up with the
network cable instead of the USB connection. Using my
motorola installation CD I uninstalled the Motorola
drivers hoping that xp would treat the SB4200 as a new
piece of hardware when I rebooted, but it did not. I now
have no connection to internet because the drivers are
gone and the Mototrola Install CD only installs them if
your hardware is new. I downloaded the Drivers at the
Motorola site but it does not have an install program
with it. It gave me this package.
netmotcm.cat, NetMotCM.inf and NetMotCM.sys I know
the .sys is the driver and it goes in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
DRIVERS but where does the .cat and .inf file go?
The other option is "What do I do to make my xp system
think the Motorola SB4200 is not yet installed?
Sincerely - Frustrated XP guy,
Hass

First thing first:
Most likely the computer came with a NIC (either on-board
or as a CARD.)
So you do not need any drivers.
If you installing a new PCI or PC card you will need to
intall the drivers.
Once the NIC drivers are install all you have to do is
contect a hard line from the wireless to you computer so
you can configure it. Setup security on the WAP (
Wireless Access Point).
By Default your computer will be setup to obtain IP-
Address Automaticlly and the Wireless router is by
default setup to Automaticlly accept an IP-ADDRESS from
your cable modem. So you really do not have to setup a
single thing. Just Plug in and go.
to check you IP address goto Command Propt and type:
IPCONFIG /All
this will give you all the stats on your NIC
IP-ADDRESS
SUBNET
DEFAULT GATEWAY
DNS SERVERS
Let me know what you get.

The .inf file is the install file. Make sure all of those downloaded driver files are in
one folder, RIGHT click the NetMotCM.inf file, then when the context menu opens, LEFT
click on Install. If a dialog box comes up saying one of the other files can't be found,
give the path of the folder where the files are located. (Sometimes downloaded drivers are
the same as drivers supplied on a CD, and look for the folder listed on the CD, even when
they've been download, so you have to give the path where the files really are) Reboot
your system when the driver install has completed.
