Is direct x 9c worth the upgrade?

Any problems on 98se or xp?

I have both 98se and xp and Direct x 9b?

Hi

Some newer games require DirectX 9.0c - the documentation will tell you.
I've had no problems with DirectX 9.0c using XP Home/Pro SP2.

I use 9c on my 98SE computer with no ill effects.
No, I didn't notice any improvement over 9b.
In fact, I haven't noticed an improvement in any version above 6 or 7.

I'll go with Buffalo on whether there's an improvement. Not that I know
he does, but I don't run any games of note. It was DirectX9.0b came in
hard for me, taking TWO reboots before it would finish it's install;
9.0c was easy. (However, someone else reported the reverse to have
happened to him, & WORSE than just requiring a second reboot-- 9.0c
never made it in & he couldn't reboot to Normal Mode (IIRC). Naturally,
that's just one report, & I don't quite recall it all.)

Really, best thing is to do a full system backup, before taking anything
as huge as any DirectX.

In order to utilise the advances in DirectX 9x, you need a video card whose drivers
support DirectX 9x, which means a fairly new video card. earlier cards will
continue to use the features they support from DirectX 7 or 8 (or 6 if it is a
really old card). The other changes in later sub-versions tend to be security
updates.

I run games such as Half-Life, Doom1,2,Quake 1,2, and 3, Unreal Tournament etc.
I think Glee's answer really summed it up.
Very new vid card and security issues.
And I agree with you about backing up your system before installing a newer
version of DirectX.

You do have experience with it, then, & games won't get better unless
they can use the new features. Hmm, now I recall, Colorado recently
posted a site of a DVD burner software that also required, well, just
DirectX9. Right, security issues are also a concern, as Glee said. OK,
then.

Or you could just wait until you install an application that needs it (and I
think sometimes comes with it, but I can't recall, for sure)

Here's the right answer at last! Nice work.

DX9c adds features for the new video cards that have been launched, and is
not merely a security patch to DX9b.

Usually, sites that offer software that need special files will say so,
just as yours did. Too bad it isn't universally so.
