Is Active X causing the problem?

I have noticed over the past 3 days that anytime I visit a website that asks
me if I want to allow an Active X control to be installed (or some such
words) after I click on OK I get the Block Message e.g. "Windows Internet
Explorer has encountered a problem" Do I want to send the report to
Microsoft?" when I click OK (whether I send the report or not, the webpage
closes, the connection is still alive, but I can't access the webpage. I
don't recall changing any settings, but I noticed when I run "Hijack This"
that (Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool) is appearing as a DPF. I
made a point of not downloading this tool, and wonder why it shows up on
Hijack. The only other thing I noticed was when I tried to log into Lycos
"Chat" services the same thing happened. Can anyone explain why this is
occurring, and if so how do I remedy it?
Any advice gratefully appreciated. Sorry about lack of brevity

Keep us updated on this one, please... AFAIK there's at least one
malware that pretends to be a WGA component, but if this really is a
WGA tool from MS that's there against your intent, that's news too.
