I have Windows XP home and I just installed a linksys BEFCMU10 ver.3 modem

This is the most common error message I'm getting when my computer crashes.
This started to occur after I installed a new cable modem. I'm also getting
a response from MSFT online crash report citing Linksys is causing the error
and the error occurs in BEFCMU10.SYS and BEFCM3XP.SYS...it's clearly the USB
drivers.. Linksys doesn't have an update patch....and I've uninstalled and
reinstalled many times to no avail.....

I tried to establish an ethernet connection, but I can't seem to get the
connection to work..

My external cable modem doesn't require any driver, it just connects via my
NIC.
I configure it through a browser window...
Have you tried connecting it via ethernet instead of USB?

I would suggest dumping the USB connection and using an Ethernet port if you
can, particularly since the USB drivers obviously don't like something on
your machine.

There's no real need to install extra USB drivers if the modem has an
ethernet port, which it does, and if your computer has an ethernet jack.
If your computer doesn't, consider getting one. They can be had for about
$15 and are generally easy to install if there is an available slot.

If you can't get an ethernet card into your machine, consider a
USB-to-ethernet adapter. A Linksys example is the USB100M , EtherFast®
10/100 Compact USB Network Adapter. You can maybe get it for around $25.

Uninstall the USB drivers, reboot the modem and the computer. Plug the
modem into your computer's ethernet port with a standard ethernet cable
(NOT a crossover cable). Go to Control Panel, network connections,
right-click on the ethernet connection under "LAN or high-speed internet"
and choose Repair.

That should be all you have do to. If there are error messages, follow what
they tell you. The ethernet connection should have tcp/ip installed, set
to get an address automatically. Nothing else is needed unless your cable
company tells you differently.
