IRQ conflict

Thomas Scheiderich

I was reinstalling a NIC card and got this message that said I was
sharing an IRQ with a MASS STORAGE CONTROLLER. Later, I didn't get that
message.

When I looked at the device manager I found this controller with a
Question mark (I assume that this is the one it was talking about,
except it is using IRQ 10, and nothing else is).

I am running on an ASUS A7V-133 board with the following using IRQ 9:

(ISA) 9 Microsoft ACPI-compliant System

(it then lists the IRQ 12-15) then:

(PCI) 9 ATI Rage (video controller)
(PCI) 9 Intel Pro 10/100 adapter (NIC)
(PCI) 9 VIA AC'97 Audio Contoller (WDM)
(PCI) 9 VIA USB Universal Host Controller
(PCI) 9 VIA USB Universal Host Controller
? (PCI) 10 Mass Storage Controller

Is this a problem? The only things I have in my PCI slots are my Video
card and my NIC card.

I have no idea what this Mass Storage controller is. I do have 2 Hard
Disks installed, but I can't see how this is a problem.

Here is what I get from Belarc:

61.70 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
34.97 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

MITSUMI CD-ROM FX4830T!B
3.5" format removeable media [Floppy drive]

IBM-DPTA-372050 (20.53 GB) [Hard drive] -- drive 1
IC35L040AVER07-0 (41.17 GB) [Hard drive] -- drive 0

For Local Drive Volumes Belarc gives me:

c: (on drive 0) 41.16 GB 22.16 GB free
d: (on drive 1) 2.15 GB 405 MB free
e: (on drive 1) 12.10 GB 7.45 GB free
f: (on drive 1) 6.30 GB 4.97 GB free

I am just curious if I have a problem here.

Thanks,

Tom.

I would guess that you have the optional IDE RAID or the Promise ATA100
controller on that Motherboard (but not being used) and that is what you
are seeing on IRQ 10. Disable it in the BIOS and you won't have that
question mark any more. The other option is to load the drivers for it
and use it.

Since I don't have your motherboard to look at, I have to infer this
from the discription you gave and the "sales info" about your
motherboard. IF you have the Promise ATA100 controller then it would be
used to take advantage of the higher data transfer rate of ATA100
harddrives. The Primary and secondary IDE channels are likely ATA66. You
should probably get out the manual for your motherboard and read up on
it's capabilities if you want to really know what you have.

What is the Promise ATA100 controller? Why would I use it? It has the
2 IDE controllers - IRQ 14 and 15.

Tom - if it isn't completely clear to you from Bob I's notes, the
A7V-333 board comes in 2 flavors: one with a built-in Promise ATA-100
Raid controller, and one without. You may well have the Raid controller
but not know it! That controller (I believe) can operate as Raid or
simply as an ordinary controller (2 cables, each supporting 2 devices).
The BIOS and the Asus CD that came with the board have all the settings
and drivers you need to activate it if you wish. With that optional
Promise controller, the A7V-333 can support up to 8 devices with no
other controller cards installed, because the board always has the
standard primary & secondary controller slots regardless.
