ipconfig/renew error

I work from my home office, and recently downloaded new software that allows
me to connect to our company Intranet. however, ever since then, i have had
trouble connecting to both External and Internal sites. My cable modem is
working, i'm getting a signal, but I'm unable to connect.
I've talked to my ISP and my company help desk, and the latter asked me to
do an ipconfig/renew, but I kept getting this error:
An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection: unable to
contact your DCHP server. Request has timed out.

Any thoughts?

Try releasing first.

Open a command prompt.
Type or paste:

ipconfig /release

Hit Enter.
Type or paste:

ipconfig /renew

Hit Enter.

Now try it.

If that doesn't work, try this...

Open a command prompt.
Type or paste:

ipconfig /release

Hit Enter.

Reboot both you modem (unplug it until the machine reboots, then plug it
back in) and your computer.

Open a command prompt.
Type or paste:

ipconfig /renew

Hit Enter.

Try again.
