ipconfig no working

R

Ron

Hi here is a strange one. A friend of mine wanted to know what his ip
address was so opened a command prompt and typed in ipconfig /all. The
cursor dropped to the next line and that was it. No information, nothing. He
left it for 10 mins and still nothing. He checked the file properties of it
and they are the same as the file on my computer. However he decided to do a
sfc /scannow but of course since his original windows XP Pro disk does not
have SP2 he got the error message about the version of windows being older.
So what does he do? How can he get ipconfig working?
Thanks Ron

There is a back up copy of file on HD.
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

Copy to C:\Windows\system32
Yes to overwrite file.

if that doesn't work, something else must be wrong.

Does his internet service actually work? or is there an actual problem.

All that I could find is there is a registry key that ipconfig looks at.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\YourNetworkInterface

NoteYourNetworkInterface is the network that is configured to use TCP/IP.
The primary DNS server IP address that is assigned by using a Group Policy is
stored in the following registry key:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810566

If key is not there, I don't know.

Check the firewall settings.

Have him update his antivirus software and run a full system scan.

What happens if he types ipconfig /? Note: ipconfig /?

ipconfig help should display.

What kind of firewall?

I have ZoneAlarm.

I deleted ipconfig from the ZA approved list.
Opened a command prompt, typed ipconfig /all and hit Enter.
The cursor dropped to the next line and a ZA popup appeared asking for
permission to access the internet.

Check the firewall settings.

I saw your reply to Ron's question about ipconfig not working. I tried to
post a new question to this website, and for some unknown reason, it won't
let me...could it be the curse of those who only have a rudimentary knowledge
of computers? I digress...I was hoping someone could see this question about
problems I'm having that have created an IP issue and help. A brief (but
frustrating history)...I run Windows XP and have DSL service through Verizon.
"Something" disabled my Norton 2006 Anti-virus auto-protect and will not
allow it to be turned on. Then it disabled my Norton 2006 firewall, can't
turn it back on. A repeated virus scan, etc., says nothing found. Then I
found a new user account. Then lost my internet connection. My modem broke.
Verizon sent me a new one, still don't have DSL service. Line and modem are
working. Verizon support had me run ipconfig\all. I get nothing, just a
blank line. They say wierd. IP address gone. They tell me to get an ethernet
card. From reading this thread it seems it could be an ipconfig command
problem, a path problem. I don't know. Can an IP addess just disappear?
Would reinstalling XP help? Should I call Symantec even though software says
no viruses? Any suggestion would be so appreciated.

It sounds to me like you have a bad virus.

What is the name of the new user account?

The command is ipconfig /all *not* ipconfig\all

If you try ipconfig\all you will get the following error...
[[The system cannot find the path specified.]]

What happens if you type

ipconfig

Do you get this...
[[Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected]] ??

or
ipconfig /?

Do you get ipconfig help?

You do not need to be online for either of those commands to work.

Yes an IP address can disappear. Unplugging the modem does that. Or a
virus that may have done something.
