ip address & subnetmask help on how to set.

ok I have a adsl router(192.168.1.*)sub (255.255.255.0) one computer
(192.168.1.*) and the same subnet.The other computer will not set the same
subnet.ex(255.255.0.0)If I asign the ip address and the subnet address
manualy it goes on the network.The only thing is it won't use the
Internet.How do I get the 2nd computer to automactily set the ip address to
192.168.1.next available number. and subnet of 255.255.255.0 ?

Please help!!!!!!!!!

I'd look at two router settings:
# Make sure that the DHCP server scope is large enough to serve both the
existing and new computers.
# Make sure there's no MAC address filter on the router.

If you can't find any problem with the router, run "ipconfig /all" on both
computers. Check / correct the following settings on the problem computer:
# Default Gateway.
# DNS servers.

just to add..

a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 will do it. It is put on your DHCP
Server (prob your home router) and applies to all your computers .

I guess when you said 255.255.0.0 that was a typo.

as to why it might not be doing it.. v odd. But, chuck gave some
suggestions
