I used to be frustrated by constant pop-up ads. Thanks
to Spybot and Google's pop-up blocker (3152 blocked), I
have the problem 98% solved.
However, now there's a new variant, an invisible pop-up
that freezes my computer. The window never visually
opens.
In the window tabs at the bottom of the screen, a new tab
appears, titled "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by
Comcast High-Speed Internet". This is normally the
second of two parts to a window title, the first part
being the actual page title, e.g., "Community
Newsgroups". The first part is missing.
Also, the IE application icon is altered. IE normally
shows an "e" superimposed over a page outline. The
invisible pop-up icon does not have the page outline
behind the "e".
I can not simply close the pop-up window. When I close
(by right-click on the window tab), all my open IE6
windows close with it and a 'crash' window appears so
that I can report this to Microsoft.
The invisible pop-up freezes my computer. Windows Task
Manager shows that 'iexplore.exe' is grabbing 96%-98% of
my total CPU resource. Nothing else can compete. When I
close the pop-up and thus crash IE6, my CPU usage returns
to normal. I can work in other applications and can open
IE6 again.
IE6 will run normally anywhere from 3 to 90 minutes
(usually on the shorter side) before the next invisible
pop-up appears. As far as I can recall, the invisible
pop-up arises when I click on a link to open another
window. The desired window stalls before opening, and a
tab for the invisible window opens int the window tab
tray a minute or so later. As well as I can remember,
the invisible window does not spontaneously appear (as
normal pop-ups would) when I am just reading a page,
though I can't swear that it has never happened that way.
Is this scenario familiar to anyone? What causes this
problem? How is it fixed?
