I tried the Bootpart.exe as recommended by Pegasus and
altho it ran and 'said" it had writteen the boot
partition, the pc still refused to boot and got
the "invalid..." message.

Oddley enuff I later installed WinXP SP1a in the second
primary partition and so doing Win2K (1st primary
partition) booted normally and no error message. Partition
Magic pqboot.exe for windows now boots eithe 2K or XP
normally, and a reboot while in either 2k or XP boots
normally also.

My guess is that the XP install repaired whatevah was
broke.
