w2k doesnt keep boot.ini

hi to all,

after unsuccessfully trying to run my win2000 after an install of xp pro on
my 2nd partition i gave up, reloaded my win2000 ntdetect, ntldr, and
boot.ini. since then i cannot boot 2k without using the 2k install cd in the
repair mode and doing a fixmbr - the system will then boot 2k and all works
as usual. until the next boot... then i go thru the same nonsense - the
boot message is 'invalid boot.ini record, correct and replace'. my boot.ini
is as follows:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Default to Microsoft
Windows 2000" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
[C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Recovery Console" /cmdcons]

my system has 2 hard dives, an 80gig C drive and a 200 gig sata D drive. the
Cdrive has 2 ntfs partitions, the D has also 2 ntfs partitions with win2000
as the logical C: 1st partition and xp as the logical D: 2nd partition - my
primary C drive is logical U: and E: drives.

i've tried different boot.ini files and placed them everywhere that the
loader might look for it to no avail. no problems until the xp install.

if anyone can tell me something else to try it would me greatly
appreciated..

Rob

Format a floppy on your system. Copy boot.ini, ntldr and ntdetect.com
to it. And add a simple text editor that you can run on a DOS disk.

You can edit the boot.ini on the floppy without fear. Just boot with
the floppy in A: . When you're happy with it, put it on your hard disk
boot partition.

The rdisk(x) values for Windows 2000 don't match.

The default line only needs the following:
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000

The boot.ini, along with ntldr and ntdetect.com, belongs in the active
primary partition of the disk drive that the BIOS is set to boot from.
Run Disk Management and look for the partition that is identified as
system.
