turned on pc this morning and got
Invalid BOOT.INI file
Booting from c:\windows\

Tried running xp install disc (sp2) (currently running sp3 on machine) and
got
STOP 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000.

Everything I read says I need to run the recovery console and bootcfg, but I
can't seem to get there. Not an expert by any means, need help. Any ideas??

Especially, did you BOOT from CD (You only talk about "running") ?

By the way:
Did you install the day before the ASK Toolbar in IE8 ?
It's a known reason for disappearing boot.ini's

"Invalid Boot.ini" or "Windows could not start" error messages when you
start your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184
Advanced troubleshooting for "Stop 0x0000007B" errors in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103

One of many causers of the Stop 0x0000007B:
The boot volume is corrupted and cannot be initiated by Windows XP. If the
file system is corrupted and if Windows XP cannot initiate the boot volume
during the startup process, either move the drive to another computer that is
running Windows XP and run the chkdsk command on that drive or try to create
a parallel installation of Windows XP on the drive (in a separate folder).
The Windows XP Setup program checks the integrity of the volume before it
copies files, and it may fix some problems in the process.

thanks for help guys, but now what??? Yes I tried to boot from cd. If the
drive is inaccessabledue to needing sata drivers for cd boot, and it is a
sata drive(just checked), is there a way to create a boot disc that loads the
sata drivers so i can atleast get to recovery console?? If not, whats the
next move? Right now, sent someone for new hard drive to load xp on, slave
other drive, and try to at least run a chkdsk. Will I be able to write a
boot.ini to old drive by slaving it??

Stop at the first part.

When you got the message about invalid boot.ini (is that exactly what
it really said), did Windows still boot or what happened next?

If you have a floppy drive in your machine, or can get hold of a USB floppy
drive, go to another computer, download the SATA drivers and put them on a
floppy disk.
Insert the floppy disk either into your machine's floppy or attach the USB
drive.
Boot from the XP CD and shortly after you will see a message at the bottom
"Press F6 for third-party drivers". The boot continues from the CD and
eventually a dialog appears asking you to select the drivers. They should
already be highlighted if there is only one set on the floppy.

You may need to enter the BIOS and change the SATA controller settings to
"Legacy" "IDE" or "Enhanced" to access the drive in Recovery Console.
