The jabber IM protocol lets you work at any scope you want, since you can
run your own server. If you're able to run your own server, I recommend try
installing a jabber server for your LAN. See http://www.jabber.org/
The advantage of this is that everyone in the LAN will be able to use
messenging, but the server doesn't have to be on the Internet. And there
are dozens of clients you can choose from, so people are not stuck using a
single client.
