Internet troubles

I have WindowsXP Home and have a broadband connection to
the internet. In the last couple of months the internet
has locked up, or i lose my connection after 10 to 20
minutes after a fresh reboot. I play online MMORPG games
and know of the lag and constant booting from the game but
this is not the case. After exiting all programs I try to
open IE6 and it comes up "Page Could Not be
Displayed"...The modem is still on and running, i've even
called the cable company and they said there was no
problem and that I indeed had a good connection. They
suggested that there might be some sort of port blockage
because i could not do a DNS dump through the command
prompt (after all firewalls and protection programs were
shut down) The only fix for this it seems is to reboot the
system....6 or 7 times of this per day ... it gets old
after awhile. There must be a permanent fix for this. Any
help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

What firewalls and protection programs are you running?

When you lose your connection, do the cable modem lights show you still
connected?

Please describe in a bit more detail what you have told Comcast tech support,
and what they have had you try.

The next time you lose connection:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report text of error messages.

How current is your virus protection? Try these free online virus scans:

Now check for, and learn to defend against, additional carriers of infection.

First, download LSP-Fix and WinsockXPFIx from <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>,
and CWShredder from <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html>. All are
free.

Next, run CWShredder. Have it fix all variants.

Now check for, and remove, spyware. Get HijackThis
<http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155> and Spybot S&D
<http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download>. Both free.
1) Install and run Spybot. First update it ("Search for updates"), then run a
scan ("Check for problems"). Trust Spybot, and make all recommended deletions.
2) Install and run HijackThis. Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log.
3) Have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the following
forums (and post it here):

<http://www.wilderssecurity.com/>

If removal of any spyware affects your ability to access the internet (some
spyware builds itself into the network software, and its removal may damage your
network), run LSP-Fix and / or WinsockXPFIx.

Harden your browser. There are various websites which will check for
vulnerabilities, here are three which I use.

Harden your operating system. Check at least monthly for security updates.

Block possibly dangerous websites with a Hosts file. Three Hosts file sources I

(The third is included, and updated, with Spybot (see above)).

And Chad, please don't contribute to the spread of email address mining viruses.
Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a bit safer when
posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the internet - never
post your address unmunged.

I have seem this problem many times with some cable modems (epecially the
Motorola SB4100) when connected by USB. If that is the case for you,
switching to ethernet will immediately resolve it. If that not the case,
please give some more details, as there are other possibilities. (e.g dsl
or cable?, what modem? what service? etc.)
