Internet Time [Update Now] After SP2

After installing SP2 On XP Home when I try [Update Now] on Internet Time
I get the message:
"An error occured while Windows was synchronizing with time.windows.com.
The time sample was rejected because: The peer's stratum was less than the
host's stratum."

Can anyone offer an explanation & fix?

Hi, I just tried it then and got the same error you did? Never had this happen
before.

David,

The rumor does not make sense. None MS firewalls aside, if you put
another NNTP server in the list it works just fine.

I know that this issue has flared up since SP2. But I have seen the
Stratum error messages long before SP2 on several of my clients boxes.
Simply changing the servers solved the problem.

Rumours are that employers complained to M$ that workers are spending
their time looking at the time all the time when they should be producing
revenues for them. So M$ took the opportunity to block auto-sync in SP2.

The fix I can suggest is to change the time daily manually!!
Incidentally, if you like this then send an email to: (e-mail address removed)
In fact even if you don't like this just send an email of whatever you
deem fit!!

You might also have a look at kb307897 on M$ website. The article is
rather old (14/07/2004) so it is pre SP2!!

Hope this doesn't help!!

I use non Microsoft products wherever possible which requires no
activation.

I use Netscape 7.2 as my default browser which has everything I need for
my work.

I believe in good Financial Management!! I do not believe in enriching
rich jerks!

Are you a gynecologist? I think it's not very nice to refer to your
female clients' private parts as "boxes."

I forget the details, but I remember this coming up in the early days of
XP, and it is not an SP2 matter. It relates to some 'level of
priorities' (named stratum) which the server expects to be correct; and
somehow gets out of line - possibly during an overload. As indicated,
changing to another server is effective; some worth knowing of are
time.nist.gov
time-a.nist.gov
time-b.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov
time-c.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov
tock.usno.navy.mil

It's working tonight, just auto sychronized successfully now. The alternative I had
listed in the drop down menu was time.nist.gov. Probably just a glitch in the system.
Thanks for explaining it Alex.
