Internet is slow after installing Norton software

After I upgraded Norton System Works 2006 on Norton Internet Security 2007 my
compute been performing very slow. It takes forever to start-up, open and
close Internet Web pages. Sometimes while I am on the Internet, the web page
locks up or the error window comes up and saying that this page could not be
displayed. Every time I click on a certain link, it would not open it, I have
to click on it couple of times to make it work. I have Windows XP, use
wireless Internet and my computer is only 2 years old. I never had these
problems before till after I installed Norton Internet Security 2007.
I have tried to cleanup my disc drive, empty my Recycle Bin, and remove
temporary Internet files. That didn't really solve any problems. I have
41.4GB of free space on my hard drive, twice more than the used space. I
think the problem is the new software. Every time I start my computer I get
an error massage that my Norton System Works 2006 is expired and I have no
Internet protection, while Norton Internet Security 2007 is working correctly.
If anyone knows what is going on please help me.
Thank you,

Why? There are plenty of FREE alternatives that work at least as well, if
not better.

Security 2007.

That's your answer then, isnt it? Ditch Norton and use free AVG for viruses
and ZoneAlarm for a firewall...

Even better to ditch Zone Alarm and purchase a router.

I would remove both programs (first NIS 2007, then NSW 2006), and then get
Norton's removal utility. (you can find it on the Symantec website) After
running this utility, use Disk Cleanup (Start > Run > cleanmgr), and delete
all temp. files. If there's anything you want to keep using from NSW 2006,
do a "Custom" Install and choose only the non-Internet / security related
items. Then, re-install NIS 2007. Update both with LiveUpdate. That should
bring things back to normal. Also, make sure you have all the Windows
Updates.

Also, check and see that you have at least 512 MB of RAM... if not, you
should invest in more. NIS includes a "Personal Firewall" which requires
more processing power / RAM, and does slow things down on basic computers.
It's not something you had with NSW 2006, so that's part of why you notice a
difference.

Best Wishes,
Kurosh

Why ditch Zone Alarm? With Zone Alarm, you get to see which programs
are trying to access the Internet and you can then authorize the ones
you want to go thru.

With a router, you are only "really" protecting the networked PCs from
being access off the Internet. You do not block any programs from
going out to the Internet.

BTW: Most routers are not "true" firewalls. They mainly provide a
"means" of allowing multiple PCs to access the Internet with one IP
address. This is a method os hidding you PCs true IP address (with
NAT.)

Zone Alarm does have a negative impact on the overall performance of a
computer.

As for stopping unwanted outgoing traffic that is a "too late"
scenario. Much better to stop the unwanted items from getting
installed in the first place with effective antivirus and antispyware
software.

And Zone Alarm can be problematic. In fact the first step that any
tech support person (including myself) will take with regard to any
Internet or network problems on a computer with Zone Alarm installed
is to shut it down. In a high percentage of the cases that alone is
enough to resolve the problem.

While it is true that it is technically possible for an intrusion to
get past a NAT router but that would be blocked by a software firewall
such as Zone Alarm. However as a practical reality the possibility of
such an intrusion actually occurring is so slight as to be negligible.
