Is it possible to delete the application and re-install

Hi Ron,

No need to delete first. Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab,
set it to "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected
operating system files [recommended]". Also uncheck "Hide extensions for
known file types".

Then, open Windows Explorer from Start/All Programs and go to the
C:\Windows\Inf folder. Locate the ie.inf file, right-click it and choose
install.

You may need to either insert your WinXP CD or know where your I386 folder
is located on the hard drive. You may also need to know where the
\ServicePackFiles folder is (usually under the Windows directory).

As it happens I just did this myself, following the KB article that José
provided. What ended up working for me was the bit about editing the
registry to indicate IE is not installed and then reinstalling.

It was a bit of a puzzle to me. Netscape had taken over IE's search
controls and I could not remove it -- IE's configuration controls for
that bit of IE had been disabled. Doing the scan of all XP files to see
whether they had been tampered with, as recommended by the article,
turned up nothing. Yet reinstalling IE did indeed fix my problem so I
presume the code was changed somewhere. After the reinstall, Netscape
was still selected, but IE's configuration software then worked again
and could change it.
