That was my fault. I should have backed up the registry. I finally got to
setup with Dell's setup disc and will format the hard drive and reinstall. I
have checked the sound card to be sure it is well seated and blown out the
dust. I will get back to you as soon as I have reinstalled. Maybe the sound
card will install properly this time..
Question: Is there such a thing as a bootable setup CD, like the floppy we
used to make for Win98 and earlier?
:
Hi dea,
First, it is my Recommendation to you the Kelly-korner not Joe, sorry for
the trouble.
I can't see why it screwed up, but if it a clean install I will try to see
the sound card is seated firmly in it's slot and clean the Dust by air
compressed can or blow gently out of the Case.
Try to follow these steps for clean install and if it is expansion card, try
to get the CD/DVD or Floppy for the driver and pay attention when windows
install and ask for driver and you can select I have a disk , that if the
sound card is n't defective for some reason!.
Here is a link to prepare yourself fro clean install:

If you wish you can Boot into safe Mode by tapping the F8 and do a system
restore before the registry changes took place.
HTH.
Good luck.

I went to Kelly's Korner and added line 371 to the registry...It really
screwed up my computer and I didn't backup the registry(dumb me). The
computer won't boot up. I don't have an A Drive, so can't use it to
restart...It is a Dell computer so I'm using their CD to reinstall but I
can't get to the Setup, so I can format. I can only get to where it says
press ENTER to install XP, or press R to repair. If I press R, to repair, I
get stuck on having to put in an Adminstrators password. I press enter to get
past that and It won't accept it...I've done it before, and gotten past the
Administrator password, but I must be doing it wrong somehow this time... It
might be awhile before I get back to you guys...but don't give up on
me...LOL!!
:
went into the BIOS and listed under "Integrated Devices" was Legacy Select
Options and a place to turn the sound on and off. It was off, I turned it on,
but it made no difference. That was the only adjustment I could make to it,
no place to disable or delete....
...I don't have an Integrated Sound card. It is a PCI Creative Sound
Blaster, and is in a PCI slot on the system board. I don't understand how
it(Legacy) ever got installed. Any ideas will be appreciated...
I will also try what Joe advised on Kelly's Korner. Will let you know how I
do..

Hi Nass,
I ended up doing a clean install. Everything is back to normal except my
sound card didn't install properly...I have no sound...It looks like XP
installed drivers for a Legacy card and I have a Creative Sound
Blaster...Anyway I want to disable the Legacy card or delete it in Device
Manager but it is grayed out and I can't click on it...I've reinstalled my
Creative Sound card twice more and it just doesn't load the drivers...Is
there any way I can disable the Sound Card?
Thanks,
Dean

When using Internet Explorer and click on "Select a new post", I get
a mini
web page with a big red X on it..Can anyone tell me what that
signifies? If I
use a different browser, I don't have a problem...
Hi Dean,
It could be your Firewall is blocking these images, your security and
settings on the IE, try to clear your caches and reduce the size of
the TEMP
to 50-80 MBs.
Read this link:

Hi nass,
Thanks for the reply. I have disabled my firewall, deleted cache,
reinstall,
repaired Internet Explorer, and none of those things have worked..I have
all
of my security settings set at default., and I reduced my temp to 50.
Don't
know what to try next except, maybe a clean install..
Hi Dean,
1... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .
Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button
called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click
on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on
[
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.
= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on
your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there
Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them
one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit or you can send them here in your next
post) and click [OK] to confirm your Changes.
Click on Advanced Tab and scroll down under the browsing option and
uncheck
this box:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) and click Apply
then OK to close your IE Properties.
2.... And also for malwares from here:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D
Run disk Clean Up and Defrag in safe mode, then Open run command and type
in:
sfc /scannow click [OK]
Note the space between sfc_/
HTH.
Let us know.
Reboot to the BIOS and disable it there.
Beside Joe advise, try this fix from here:
Line 371 - Restore Sound windows Audio service
