Internet Explorer will not "search"

Recently our computer has started acting "strange". If we are on the
internet, we can go to any website stored in favorites or links and can click
on hyperlinks and go to those sites. However, we cannot type in a website in
the address bar and click "go" nor can we enter a subject in that line for a
search. At the same time, this began happening, we noticed that in Excel or
Word, the computer would "lock up" if we tried to "Save as" on a new file.
Can someone point me in the right direction as to what might be wrong.

That might be due to the KB908531 update, as number of users have noted
various issues after having installed that update. Please have a look at my
