Internet Explorer Toolbar Customization Problems

B C B

I recently bought a new PC with Windows XP. I have
customized the toolbars in Internet Explorer and have
them all in the size and position I like. However, every
time I restart the computer, the settings reset to
default with the standard buttons, links, etc. popping
back up. I don't like rearranging everything every time
this happens. Does anyone know how to prevent the
toolbars from reverting to their default settings?
Thanks in advance.

I am having similar probs - here is my message
I am referring to internet explorer. I have just bought a new compute
and it has Windows XP Home on it.

When I initially started to use it it had MSN as the home page.
changed it to have google as my home page. This worked satisfacorill
for a while untill without me doing anything the home page changed t
the site

res://mshp.dll/index.html#2277

I do not want this site to be my home page so I tried to change th
homepage site by goint through the step

tools/internet options/ and then typing a new hompepage site in th
section / apply / OK

this does change the home page for the next time I use internet explore
but on subsequent times it always returns to

res://mshp.dll/index.html#2277

as the home page - and this is the site remembered as Set default
Thisd is very frustrating and i would much prefer to open interne
explorer to have either MSN or Google as my home page but i keep gettin
directed to

res://mshp.dll/index.html#2277

as my default. I have also tried using the Set as Homepage link on th
MSN home page site but i always get redirected to

res://mshp.dll/index.html#2277

on the second and all subsequent connections to internet explorer.
know this is a littlelong winded but i hope you can give me informatio
as to how to avoid this link taking place

Many Thank

It won't help, Dave. Download and run HighjackThis once done, close all IE
windows. It will list the five entries placed in the registry. Once
removed, go back to Internet Options and reset your homepage.

I tried downloading the tweak you suggested Kelly. It
didn't solve the problem. I never had this problem in
Windows 98. Aside from not crashing yet (after a week
and a half of use), Windows XP hasn't impressed me yet.
Windows 98 was my friend. Anyway, any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Most welcome. However, you need to install and run hijackthis to remove the
5 registry key settings created and then reset your home page. Sorry to
say, but Win98 wouldn't have helped you here either.

If it helps, I was a Win98SE diehard, moved on during XP beta and never
looked back. That was over two years ago.

Good luck!

More info:

Homepage resets to: res://mshp.dll/index.html#22776

It makes changes here: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Default_Search_URL
Start Page

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Default_Page_URL
Default_Search_URL
Search Bar
Search Page
Start Page

It also adds: C:\Windows\mshp.dll

Manual Procedure: Remove the above mentioned entries including going to
Start/Run/Msconfig/Win.ini/Windows/Run and Unchecking fntldr.exe

Then follow up by running HijackThis:

I finally found the fix for this stupid problem.
CWShredder will take care of this annoying hijacker problem. The
problem comes from a MSS VM Java exploit. The update comes from
windowsupdate to keep it from happening again. Also try Hijack This
out. These can be found at
