Internet Explorer problem. Help!

IE6 (SP2)

Any other program that uses the IE core, for example, Maxthon browser, Avant
Browser, etc., are wanting to save any web page as a .htm file when I type it
in the location bar. For example I type www.google.com and I get the dialog
box that ask's me if i want to Save, Open or Cancel google.htm.

In IE itself, it starts up with a blank page, and if i type in an URL I can
see a quick flash on the statusbar saying "going to <ip number>" and then it
just stays blank. Clicking on any item from one of the drop-down menu's, like
Internet Options, does nothing at all.

I have tried right clicking and installing using the ie.inf method. I have
tried doing sfc and /scannow. I have tried downloading the SP2 installer and
seeing if that would fix it, but nothings different afterwards.

I am completely unable ot get to windowsupdate.com to do any updating in
hopes of it auto-fixing the problem too.

HELLLLLLP!!!

Hi Anna, see if this is relevant to your situation?

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security
update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution (908531)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx

For those who have Hewlett Packard's Share to Web Software, there are two
registry patches to choose from (run either one or the other) not both (NB
both patches do the same thing):

Ottmar Freudenberger’s is available at:-
http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip
(Note this is a Zip file and will need to be extracted. It contains a REG
file
which needs to be imported into the registry)

and Kelly’s patch is available at:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line #383 - this is a vbs file and instructions on how to use such files are
at the top of the page.

If you hare not using “Share to Web Software†then consider the following:

Are you using a Nvidia video card? Check for updated drivers.
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Do you have Kerio Personal Firewall, if so make sure you read the article
carefully: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

For additional information regarding this issue, have a look at the posting
on Aumha.net by Maurice N, MVP Windows - Shell / User
"Problems in Windows Explorer/ Windows shell due to 908531"

If you uninstall the update make sure you read the section titled
"Workaround for Windows shell vulnerability" under Vulnerability Details:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-015.mspx

Also you’ll need to check Automatic Updates and make sure that the update
isn’t automatically downloaded - Configure Automatic Updating in Windows XP -

Thank you for replying. I read over everything and unfortunately no luck for
me.

The 908532 update was just installed on my computer after midnight today
(the 20th) with automatic updates, and I've been having this issue for a
couple of days before today. I also don't have the HP software installed. The
only thing I can see from the list that may work for me is updating my nvidia
drivers, since there is a newer version than what is on my computer, but I
have a feeling it will not work. (I will let you know later if it did.)

It appears that any porgram that uses shdocvw.dll to show a webpage in their
program OR IE itself, is just not wanting to render the page. Instead it
shows me a Save File dialog with the page name in it, and the file is
associated with Firefox.

Originally all the menu's in IE were working and any url I entered into the
Location bar would just show me the Server Not Found or No DNS error, while
every other program I have was connecting with no problem, and I was not
getting the Save As problem.

Then I came across a post that said doing this from the Run command line
might fix things:

regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

After I did that my IE menu's stopped working, and the Save File dialog
started happening instead of the Server Not Found page in IE showing. When I
type in an URL in IE now and watch the statusbar, it is showing that it is
resolving to an IP address and actually fetches the source code of the page
as a htm file if i save it and view it, then closes IE. So it's appearing
that the connection problem that originally I set out to fix IS fixed, but
now my IE menu's and the page rendering are broken. :0

I have tried registering different versions of Shell32.dll in hopes of
fixing the Menu problem, and different versions of Shdocvw.dll in hopes of
fixing the rendering, but no joy.

This one is tricky! :/

HUGE thanks to anyone who can solve this mystery!

Update:

Wooo Hoo! I managed to get it fixed!

I happened across this page
(http://www.winhelponline.com/blogs/19/MSHTML.DLL-bug-in-KB912945-update) in
my endeavors and thought I'd give it a try. I assumed the problem had to be
from one of those dll's I registered but wasn't sure which one.

Apparently when I did the register of mshtml.dll it registered a "bad" one,
so I uninstalled the update according to that page, rebooted and did it with
the /i switch as it says, and a couple of reboots later all is working fine.

:)
