Help with Internet Explorer 8 problem

ECLiPSE 2002

Got myself into a real problem trying to upgrade from Internet
Explorer 7 to version 8. I should add that IE 7 worked flawlessly so I
carried no legacy corruption into the IAE 8 download and install. Here
is what happened:
:

At first IE 8 opened and said powered by Yahoo and after it came up I
minimized it. However when I tried to bring it back up only half a
page displayed.
I then uninstalled IE 8 and using Mozilla Firefox I tried to download
IE 7 and it failed to download.
Next using Mozilla I Googled searches in an attempt to learn how to
resolve the problem and learned that one must first uninstall SP3
before IE 7 can be installed.
I dutifully uninstalled SP3 and got a popup window telling me that
some applications would not work if SP3 is uninstalled - I clicked OK.
I tried to download and install IE 7 (at this point Mozilla Firefox
was still functional) - IE 7 still would not work. When attempting to
open an error message pops up telling me that Internet Explorer
encountered a problem and needs to close
I panicked at this point and tried System Restore at different dates
prior to the attempted IE 8 debacle. At this point Mozilla no longer
worked. So I have no browser.

I cannot get into safe mode and have run disk cleaners, virus scans,
registry scans and rebooted several times with no success.
SP3 is shown on the hard drive and apparently is functional.

Can someone please suggest a remedy.

try going to control panel/add&remove
click the add&remove windows components on the left
click the internet explorer box and click next
you should then be asked to insert your XP CD and IE6 should be installed
If you get an error message post that message back here

Also when you downloaded Firefox did you not save it to a specific location
on your
hard drive..have you checked to see if it is still there so that you could
reinstall.

Inquiring minds want to know...

What is it that is so attractive about IE 8 that so many people seem
possessed to upgrade from IE 7? I have not read anyting about IE 8
because I only use it when I have to. Could be I am missing
something.

I am waiting for the post that says "I upgraded to IE 8, everything
worked perfectly and it works better than 7 ever did!"

Debacle is a good word.

The role of this newsgroup is to help people who have problems with
Internet Explorer.

The majority, who have no problem with IE 8, have no reason to post
here. For that reason, you will not see posts that say "I upgraded to IE
8, everything worked perfectly and it works better than 7 ever did!"

Right you are. But, the OP says everything was working "flawlessly"
in 7, so I was curious why the upgrade.

My attitude has been adjusted.

It doesn't need to be. Leonard Grey is making as many assumptions as anyone
else. How does he know that "The majority, who have no problem with IE 8,
have no reason to post here". If he changed "The majority" to simply
"Those", I would agree entirely with his statement.

There are a vast number of people out there who have no idea that newsgroups
exist. They may not know how to access newsgroups. Even if they do, they
may be unaware of news.microsoft.com. They may be having problems with
IE8, but look for other means to solve them.

It may be true that the majority are putting up with what they have after
installing IE8, and may not care about, or know how to fix, the problems
that come with it.

You may be old enough to remember Dos v3 and Dos 5, which were fine. Note
that I've left out Dos 4. It may well be that history remembers IE8 the
same way...

Thanks to the responders - hopefully I can salvage my browsers without
a reinstall of my operating system.
