IE 8 and Google

Note: before I download IE 8, I was having this problem with IE 7
I cannot access the google website: I get the following message:
"INTERNET EXPLORER CANNOT DISPLAY THIS PAGE"
No error codes listed, just the phrase listed above.
Questions:
1) What could be causing this problem?
2) How can WE correct this problem?
Footnote: When I use AOL instead of IE8, I CAN ACCESS the google website.
Question: Doesn't AOL use google as its search engine?

What happens if you try www.google.co.uk ? does that work? How about
finding the four quartile number web address for google.com and entering
that? Does that work? If not have a look for a file called "hosts" (it has
no file extension) in your windows folder (or system folder - I cannot
remember off hand) If there is an entry for google.com remove it. If none
of the above works get another web browser like Mozilla Firefox (free
download).

Best wishes,

Jim
