Internet Explorer Internet Options

In the security tab, under internet. When I go to Custom Level and change the
settings, it always reverts back to medium level. I cannot download any
ActiveX controls, even for Microsoft Update. When the information bar comes
up and you right-click on the bar, the only message is for Information, there
are no other choices. How can this be fixed?

WinXP SP2? In WinXP SP2, Medium is the lowest default level one can assign
to Internet zone. Use (Tools > Internet Options > Security > Internet >)
Custom to address the ActiveX behavior.

Are you running a Norton or McAfee application? Zone Alarm?

I have not installed any virus programs yet. I reformated the hard drive and
reinstalled Windows XP. I changed the settings in the custom level as
suggested in the information bar help, but I still get the message in the
information bar "Your security settings do not allow Web sites to use ActiveX
controls installed on your computer"

Why not, and why did you format & reinstall WinXP?

Immediately after formatting & reinstalling and before going online for the
first time, did you enable the Windows Firewall?

After enabling the firewall, was the first thing you did online going to
Windows Update and installing all critical security updates?

If not, the machine's prolly been compromised/hijacked already.
