Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

D

Diane Walker

I am running Windows XP, SP2 and Internet Explorer 7. For some reasons, I
got this error message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" when I
go to yahoo, msn, nbc web sites (including intranet web sites). Instead of
putting the web server name, I put in the IP address of the web server. I
still got the same error message (including the intranet web sites). Do you
have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Thanks.

Diane

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and

Do you recall doing anything in particular prior to noticing this
problem?

First, we need to determine if you have *any* Internet connectivity.

Go to Start > Run and type cmd in the box then press the <Enter> key. At
the command prompt, type:

ping www.google.com

What was the result?

D

Diane Walker

My Internet Explorer and Firefox was working before I cleaned up the hard
drive. Now, I cannot ping any web sites. I got the result "Request Timed
out". I can ping my internal servers. I can open Outlook. Thanks.

So it looks like whatever occurred during "cleaning up" your hard drive
is responsible for your current problem. :) How exactly did you clean
up your hard drive?

In addition to being able to open Outlook, are you able to send or
receive e-mail?

Have you tried a System Restore to a date before you cleaned up the hard
drive?

How do you connect to the Internet? Do you have a router? Have you
contacted your ISP?

Finally, in the event you need to repair and reset your Winsock
settings, see:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm

D

Diane Walker

I go to Windows Explorer and manually delete files from the Temp folder.
After I cleaned up my hard drive, I was able to browse the internet for over
3 days. I am able to send and receive email.

I have not tried System Restore. I connect to the internet through ethernet
cable. We have a T3.

At this point, I don't know if my Internet Explorer or Windows XP has a
problem.

Thanks.

Diane, it sounds to me like this is a work computer. That being the
case, you need to ask your IT person.
